cast brass plate with die-struck tongue disc. Bench-assembled with four
slashes on back of each belt loop. Bench-assembled construction and
tight fit of tongue bar thought to date this stock pattern device from
the Civil War period. Its eagle motif’s rounded wings and
uninterrupted arc of stars above the acorn, was patterned after the
standard design of the Navy’s contemporary general service plates.
