Cast brass
plate with integral eagle motif and tongue applied 3 piece nickel-silver
wreath. The quality of the motif indicated a follow-up strike in a metal
die, or it was cast in a plaster or metal mold. No bench number.
Early-war enlisted plate contracted by the ordinance department (or a
state) measurably larger than the 1861 regulation width. It exhibits
especially fine detail with stars in the shield, a double row above the
motto, and no “edge of clouds”.
