War Canteen Kit Directions
| This was sent to me by
Sgt. Pinkney and we have found his direction to be tried and true. We
feel this material (brown jean cloth) is the most accurate reproduction
offered, and allows you to have the most authentic impression at a fair
cost to you.
“Measure across face of the canteen to get true diameter. Add 1/2" to 5/8" to the measurement of Jean Cloth. Put both pieces of cover over canteen and tuck edges under along edge of canteen (use pins). Temporarily tack the cover in place with several loops of thread, make sure cloth runs horizontal, being careful that the edges of the wool do not fray (Cloth has been pre-shrunk and edges have a fray sealer). Using a double length of heavy cotton thread, approx. 36" long, stitch together along the edges of canteen about 1/8" apart and at 45 degree angle. Tuck under as you go along. When you get to the side loop, stitch several times in the same place and tie off. Repeat on other side from loop to spout.”
